Sunset Elementary has been the recipient of such grants and awards as the following:
- In 2017 Principal Sophie Lee was awarded the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership presented by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Received the 2017 National Blue Ribbon Award from the U.S. Department of Education which recognizes schools with exemplary high performance in academics for English Language Arts and Mathematics.
- Given the Green Achievers award, an honor in the California Green Ribbon Schools recognition program, 2017.
- Designated a Gold Ribbon School by The California Department of Education in 2016.
- Honored for Technology and the Exemplary Arts Programs by The California Department of Education in 2016.
- Principal Sophie Lee received the Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award, Elementary School level, for the 2014-2015 school year. This an annual award recognizes outstanding SFUSD principals for their dedication, professionalism, and work on behalf of our City’s young people.
- Principal Sophie Lee was named Elementary Principal of the Year for San Francisco and San Mateo Counties in 2013 by The Association of California School Administrators.
- McGauly Family Limited grant of $1500 for the 3rd grade Edible Plants lessons and cooking projects.
- $1000 from the Toshiba America Foundation for a fourth grade electricity curriculum and project.
- Safe Routes to School grant to ensure our children’s safety to and from school.
- Altamont Grant, applied to an outdoor recycling/compost separation system and garbage separation bins to support our on-site compost system.
- Donors Choose, which has funded many of our school’s field trips and supplies, such as cookware for in-class cooking projects.
- First 5 San Francisco Grant, which has enhanced our science curriculum through in-school events and kindergarten Science Sacks for at-home experiments.
- Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program, which will allow us to expand the Science Sacks program to the 1st and 2nd grades in the 2011-2012 school year.
- Library Collection Modernization Project through which we were able purchase more than 3,000 new library books, bookcases, an area rug, and a rocking chair for our school library.
- Literacy Through Creativity grant of $10,000 to develop language through multisensory participation in story plays and to purchase art materials, supplies, and musical instruments.
- Sunset Stars Advance Toward Library Technology grant of $10,000 to upgrade our library checkout system for automation with an online catalog system.
- Early Guided Reading team grant of $5,000 to support professional development and first-grade literacy.
- Inquiry-Based Outdoor Science at Sunset team grant of $7,000 to support our Outdoor Science Program with gardening tools and supplies as well as an Outdoor Science coordinator to work with all classes.
- San Francisco School Volunteers grant of $1,000 and recipient of an Honor Roll of Schools award in 2005.
- 21st Century Community Learning Centers and After School Learning Program grant in 2003, which enabled us to offer our first afterschool program.
- A summer grant partnership program with Wells Fargo and the San Francisco Giants baseball team.
