Our academic program is designed to be challenging, emphasizing reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. In addition to the core curriculum, students have access to English language development, support for at-risk and special educational needs, visual and performing arts, technology, physical education, and outdoor science.
Science Sacks: Thanks in part to grants from First 5 San Francisco and Lowe’s, our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students are participating in the parent-run Science Sack program. Each week students take home a different science experiment, complete with supplies and detailed instructions, to do with the whole family. Interested in helping or have a question? Technology: At Sunset, we take a project-based approach to integrating the use of computers into the classroom curriculum. All 3rd through 5th grade students visit the Sunset Computer Lab once a week for an hour. This innovative program introduces students to using technology as tools for learning. Students learn the basics of typing, word processing, Powerpoint presentations and using the Internet as a research tool. Projects include 5th grade, Human Body Systems stop-motion movies; 4th grade, California Missions research and clay animations; and 3rd grade, Parts of a Plant Powerpoint presentations. Using a modified approach, the 1st and 2nd graders have two seven-week sessions in the lab. For more info, go to sfsunsetcomputerlab.blogspot.com.
Physical Education: Students in all grades have PE three times per week, using an array of new PE equipment, provided by a grant.
Library: Our school library is staffed by a credentialed librarian 2.5 days per week. Classes visit the 3,000-title library weekly and may check out books to take home. Would you like to help in the library? Email email@example.com
