At Sunset Elementary, we have a K-2nd grade Special Day Dlass and a 3rd-5th grade Special Day Class.
Both classes are specifically designed to address the needs of children with moderate to severe Autism. The teachers and staff receive training in the theories and practices of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). We utilize the ABA approach, in conjunction with many other practices, including Floortime, TEACCH, Sensory Integration, and Social Thinking. Both classrooms focus highly on social and communication skills, academic success, and self determination.
We use the general education curriculum materials, supplemented with Early Literacy Skills Builder, Handwriting Without Tears, and TouchMath to meet the varying needs and learning styles of our students. Students spend time with general education students at lunch, recess, buddies activities, and play groups, and are mainstreamed into grade level general education classes when appropriate. The children in our classes are an integral part of the Sunset Elementary community and learn many things about being a part of a meaningful group of peers.
