Sunset Elementary eNews for January 16, 2019

Quick Reminders:

  • 4 Fun Ways to School” Day, which was scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled because of likely rain.
  • If your child wants to perform at Sunset’s 11th Annual Talent Show sign them up by 2/1.  (More information here.)
  • Sloat Garden’s Growing Up Green week continues until 1/20. Mention Sunset at check out to earn gift cards for our school.
  • Student Activity Day (which was scheduled for 1/31) will be held in May.
  • There will be NO SCHOOL, Monday 1/21 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Enjoy your 3-day weekend!

Registration for After School Enrichment Classes closes Friday, January 18th at Noon

Remember to sign up for this semester’s dynamic after school enrichment classes before Friday 1/18/19 at noon.  Please refer to the flier in last week’s Wednesday folder or view the class information on the PTA website.

The next Garden Work Day Is Saturday, January 26th!

10:00 am—2:00 pm | Lunch at Noon

Come help us beautify the school gardens. Lunch will be provided by the PTA. RSVP here if you’re joining us for lunch!

Don’t forget, new this year, all adult garden volunteers will be entered in an April Garden Raffle to win FOUR Disneyland tickets! Stay for an hour or for the entire time; your entire family is welcome.






Join us on January 31st for Sunset’s Annual S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Night!

6:00pm: Dinner | 6:30-8:00pm: Science & Art Activities

 After dinner in the cafeteria at 6:00pm (Please RSVP here), Sunset families can learn about marine science, human health, and robots from from our special guests, and take in a gallery featuring third grade art.  Check out the flyer for all the details: English | Chinese.  Your help is needed for a successful dinner and event! Signup for a shift to help serve dinner or man a booth!

Our Scholastic Book Fair will be from February 11th – 15th!

The PTA receives Scholastic Dollars from book fair proceeds.  We use these Scholastic Dollars to purchase books and supplies for our school library AND classroom libraries!

More information regarding scheduled class visits, before– and after–school shopping hours, and volunteer opportunities to come next week.

Save the Date for our February 6th coffee chat!

In collaboration with Principal Lee, the PTA will offer a Parent Lectures Series.  These talks will be given by special guests on topics of importance to parents during select coffee chats. The February Coffee Chat will feature SFUSD Technology Representative Daniel Frost who will be speaking on Digital Citizenship and Well-being.

Around the City: Community Arts Exhibitions, Events and Classes

Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition
SFUSD, The Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, and the San Francisco Public Library have announced the sixth-annual Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Celebration, in honor of Ezra Jack Keats, author of the The Snowy Dayand more than 20 other books.

SFUSD students in grades K- 12 are invited to design, write, and create their own books. Select books will be showcased in an exhibition and participants will receive prizes at a reception at The Contemporary Jewish Museum!

Guidelines and entry forms can be found at or by speaking to Ms. Lam in the library, or Ms. Ingrid in art. The deadline for submission is February 22nd, 2019.

Free San Francisco “Latin American” Family Concerts
Saturday, January 19th – 2:00 pm | Noe Valley Ministry

At this FREE, family-friendly concert, woodwind players of the Quinteto Latino will join a quintet of super SFCO string players to bring you the vibrant colors and vigorous rhythms of Latin America.

School tours are now complete and would not have been possible without the help of our dedicated parents! Thank you to Chairs KRISTINE Ng and THUY Tran, to ROGER Sinasohn for AV assist, and to all of you who came by to chat with prospective parents.

Movie Night sure was an INCREDIBLE night!  A shout out to our own Sunset superstar parents – Chair TOM Soohoo, GURCHARAN Wadhwa for day of movie logistics, LISA Struck and MICHELLE Wadhwa for organizing the 3rd grade fundraiser, and all the parents that volunteered or brought a treat!
